Neobéitar puts Extremadura on the map in terms of apiculture research
“IF BEES DISAPPEARED, MAN WOULD HAVE ONLY 4 YEARS OF LIFE. WITHOUT BEES, THERE IS NO POLLINATION, NO GRASS, NO ANIMALS, NO MEN.”

Albert Einstein

Our main and most distinctive activity compared to other veterinary and technological companies in Extremadura is in the field of apiculture. Extremadura is one of the main regions in beekeeping, but in research, there is still a long way to go. That is why Neobéitar puts Extremadura on the map in terms of apiculture research.

The management and consulting of beekeeping operations are fundamental to the success of apiculture and have a series of key importance. They are critical for the well-being of bees, the production of high-quality products, environmental sustainability, and the economic profitability of apiculture. Additionally, they contribute to the promotion of responsible practices and compliance with regulations, benefiting the industry. Therefore, at Neobéitar, we aim to provide beekeepers with tools for optimal management of their operations.

For several decades, many apiaries have recorded numerous losses in beehives due to multiple causes: diseases (viral, bacterial, and parasitic), toxins, climate change, management measures, etc. This is known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Therefore, identifying the different causes of hive mortality represents a significant advancement in managing apiaries and controlling or even reducing colony collapse.

Among the diagnoses and analyses we perform are the following:

  • American and European Foulbrood
  • Varroosis
  • Nosemosis
  • Viral diseases (CBPV, ABPV, DWV, and SBV)
  • Pesticide determination
  • Oxidative stress

Additionally, we also conduct melissopalynological analyses. It is a valuable tool in beekeeping and scientific research that provides crucial information about bee diet, honey quality, plant biodiversity, and colony health. It helps beekeepers make informed decisions and scientists better understand the relationship between bees and plants in the ecosystem.

Currently, Neobéitar has two significant national projects: the NEOTEC project “Development of alternative products for the Control of Varroa destructor based on the use of posbiotics” and the NEOAPIS operative group “New treatments for controlling mortality in honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera).”

The main work of these projects is to identify and characterize the microbiota of bees and produce effective posbiotics to supplement the hives to improve their productive and sanitary state, reducing mortality. To achieve this, numerous activities are necessary: sample collection, assessments of the general state of the hive, cultures, varroa mite counts, molecular biology analyses, etc.

Likewise, to produce effective products, we conduct bioassays to test their efficacy, as well as biosafety tests to ensure they have no adverse effects on the colonies.
